What is music theory?

The textbook definition of music defines it as an entire field of study focusing on how music works.  When we think of music theory, we are going to focus on how music is composed and put together.  We will focus on several big ideas:
  • Music has it's own language
  • Music composition isn't random - it's a mix of art and science
  • Music theory has a governing set of rules (that are meant to be broken)

In this site we will focus on the fundamentals of music theory, in other words the basic building blocks/skills/knowledge needed in order to understand how music is composed and put together.  These "basics" must be practiced and mastered before moving onto more advanced music theory skills.  It is my recommendation to go through the material sequentially rather than skipping around.

Once your music theory foundation has been set, I guarantee you will begin to look at music in a completely different light.
